Few cities in Britain blend history and hospitality quite like Oxford. Best known for its honey-coloured colleges, dreaming spires and centuries-old academic traditions, the city has long drawn visitors in search of culture and architecture. But beyond the cloisters and cobbled lanes, Oxford’s food scene has been quietly evolving into something far more exciting than many expect.
Today, the city offers a compelling mix of old and new. Historic pubs sit comfortably alongside ambitious neighbourhood restaurants, artisan bakeries and globally inspired kitchens that reflect Oxford’s diverse population. From refined French bistros to cult burger destinations and Michelin starred countryside pubs just beyond the city limits, the culinary landscape here is richer and more dynamic than its scholarly reputation might suggest.
In this edition of The Knife’s spotlight series, we explore some of the restaurants and pubs helping shape Oxford’s modern dining scene; places that reward curious diners willing to look beyond the spires.
The Beefy Boys
Oxford may be known for tradition, but when it comes to burgers, The Beefy Boys bring a loud, unapologetically modern energy to the city’s dining scene. What began as four friends cooking burgers at backyard barbecues in Hereford has evolved into one of the UK’s most celebrated burger brands, earning accolades at the National Burger Awards and even placing at the World Burger Championships in Las Vegas.
Their Oxford outpost, perched on the rooftop level of Westgate, delivers exactly what fans expect: American-style "dirty burgers", indulgent loaded fries and playful cocktails served in a lively, high-energy setting. The menu is built around bold, flavour-packed creations such as the Dirty Boy and Oklahoma Onion Boy, alongside wings, tenders and famously decadent boozy milkshakes.
Inside, neon signage, an open kitchen and a buzzing bar create a space that feels more like a celebration of burger culture than a conventional restaurant; a fitting stage for a brand that has grown from humble beginnings into a national cult favourite.
Perfect for: Lively group meals, post-shopping bites at Westgate.
Nut Tree Inn
Just outside Oxford in the village of Murcott, the Nut Tree Inn is one of Britain’s great examples of the modern Michelin starred pub. Holding its star since 2008, the thatched Oxfordshire inn blends the warmth and familiarity of a traditional local with the precision and ambition of serious cooking.
Owners Mike and Imogen North run the restaurant as both a family home and a culinary destination. Mike leads the kitchen with a produce-driven approach rooted firmly in seasonality, while Imogen ensures the front-of-house retains the relaxed charm that defines the best English pubs.
The menu moves confidently between refined tasting dishes and elevated pub classics. Seasonal tasting menus celebrate ingredients at their peak – often incorporating herbs and vegetables grown in the pub’s own garden – while the à la carte offering delivers crowd-pleasers such as impeccably executed fish and chips and onglet steak with peppercorn sauce.
As with any proper country pub, Sunday lunch is a serious affair here, with roast fillet of beef, Creedy Carver duck and seasonal vegetarian dishes served with all the traditional trimmings.
Perfect for: Michelin-level dining, upmarket gastropub meals, special occasions.
KIBOU
Bringing a vibrant slice of contemporary Japanese dining to Oxford, KIBOU blends playful energy with a menu rooted in the traditions and flavours of Japan. Located within the bustling Westgate development, the restaurant has become a go-to for colourful, sociable dining where sushi, street food and sharing plates take centre stage.
The menu celebrates both craftsmanship and creativity. Alongside favourites such as chicken karaage, pork gyoza and katsu curry, premium "Tokusen" sharing dishes include beef sirloin with truffle teriyaki, yuzu miso marinated salmon and Kurobuta black pork katsu.
Sushi lovers will find plenty to explore, from vibrant Snow Crab Uramaki rolls to rich, buttery bluefin tuna chutoro. Meanwhile playful street-food-inspired dishes, including sesame prawn toast bao and Hokkaido-style spicy chicken zangi, bring a contemporary edge to the menu.
Accessible yet ambitious, KIBOU captures the energy of Japan’s casual dining culture while offering Oxford diners an inviting space to explore its flavours.
Perfect for: Sushi lovers, casual Japanese dining.
KNEAD
Oxford’s historic High Street gained a serious bakery upgrade with the arrival of KNEAD, the award-winning artisan bakery founded by John Hawes and Kris Biggs. Expanding from its Gloucestershire roots in Tetbury, Cirencester and Elkstone, the Oxford site brings the duo’s pastry-led philosophy (grounded in tradition, seasonality and meticulous craftsmanship), to the heart of the city.
Counters are stacked with the kind of baked goods that quickly build cult followings: almond croissants, pecan and maple danishes, and the bakery’s signature sausage rolls, alongside beautifully presented pastries and cakes made fresh by hand each day.
Savoury highlights include sea salt and rosemary focaccia, while the sweet selection ranges from brownies and blondies to lemon meringue pie. Coffee is taken just as seriously, with beans sourced from Bristol’s Extract Coffee Roasters.
Whether for breakfast, a mid-morning pastry or a takeaway treat while wandering Oxford’s cobbled streets, KNEAD delivers the kind of bakery/cafe experience that every great city deserves.
Perfect for: Breakfast stops, coffee catch-ups, solo dining.
Pompette
Tucked away in the leafy neighbourhood of Summertown, Pompette has quietly become one of Oxford’s most beloved dining rooms. Opened in 2018 by Pascal and Laura Wiedemann, the restaurant captures the spirit of a contemporary French bistro: relaxed, welcoming and rooted in the comforting flavours of classical European cooking.
Pascal’s culinary background spans some of London’s most respected kitchens, including time working with Henry Harris at Racine and helping open Terroirs, before launching Six Portland Road. At Pompette, that classical training meets rustic French home cooking, creating a menu that feels both refined and deeply familiar.
The daily-changing menu leans into bistro staples and seasonal produce, with dishes such as soupe de poisson, onglet with pommes frites and beautifully prepared charcuterie sitting alongside comforting desserts like canelés de Bordeaux or crème brûlée. The house baguette, made through a 48-hour artisan process and served with French salted butter, has become something of a signature.
Perfect for: Casual French bistro dining, date nights.
The Chequers Inn
A short drive from Oxford in the charming village of Berrick Salome, The Chequers Inn embodies the enduring appeal of the great British countryside pub: historic, welcoming and deeply rooted in its local community. Recently reopened following a significant refurbishment, the 17th-century Grade II-listed pub has been thoughtfully revitalised while retaining its original character, from exposed beams to cosy fireside corners.
Now part of hospitality operator Hannah Dickson’s Copper Pubs collection, the pub continues its reputation as a destination for good food and relaxed hospitality. Head chef Danny Thomas, whose career includes time at Gordon Ramsay’s Bar and Grill in Mayfair, leads the kitchen with a style he describes as smart, elevated yet accessible.
Menus focus on seasonal produce and strong local sourcing, with dishes built around nearby farms and fish deliveries from Devon. Expect refined takes on pub classics, from beer-battered fish and chips made with Brakspear’s Gravity ale to thoughtfully composed seasonal plates celebrating Oxfordshire’s countryside.
Perfect for: Countryside pub lunches, relaxed Sunday roasts, post-walk pints and snacks.
Oxford may be famous for its ancient colleges and rich history, but its dining scene tells a fascinating story. Look beyond the historic façades and you’ll find a city quietly becoming one of the UK’s most rewarding places to eat.
